Riverdale Season 4 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs From 'Chapter Fifty-Nine: Fast Times At Riverdale High'
1. It Felt A Lot More Grounded
Here we have an episode of Riverdale that promised us that it was going to focus on how its characters adapted to returning to school for their senior year... and you know what? That's exactly what it delivered.
Notice how there were no over-the-top threats from a cartoonish serial killer? What about the distinct lack of a certain Lodge relying on teenagers to do his heavy-hitting? And let's not forget how the supernatural elements of Gryphons & Gargoyles were barely a memory.
Instead of the usual in-your-face drama that we've come to expect from Riverdale, we got a somewhat reserved opening to this year's storylines that veered away from kicking things off with a bang in favor of slowly turning up the heat, allowing things to progress at a much more natural pace.
At its heart were surprisingly realistic stories about characters who desperately wanted to be more than what they were - and that ultimately set this apart from the norm, suggesting that we may be in for a relatively grounded season (one that is more akin to the show's brilliant debut outing).
Now that's the Riverdale we know and love.
