Riverdale Season 4 Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs From 'Chapter Fifty-Nine: Fast Times At Riverdale High'

2. Reggie Takes A Stand

The exploration of Reggie's relationship with his abusive father has been a long time coming, and the writers sure didn't let fans down when they finally delved into that previously-teased plot thread this week.

Could it have been enhanced by actually making his father a character (and not a caricature)? Sure, but it provided the somewhat under-utilised Reggie with a backstory that was both strong and compelling, and allowed Charles Melton a long overdue chance to shine.

The best thing about this storyline was the way in which it allowed the often stereotypical 'tough guy' to open up, revealing layers behind his brutishness and, more importantly, genuine heart. The scene in which he opened up to Archie is the best that the episode had to offer and ensured that we were rooting for him and, somehow, made a scene in which he aggressively destroyed a car seem rather touching.

Reggie stood up for himself and that, more than anything, is why this storyline was necessary.
