8. The Brandon James Backstory

One of the most interesting parts of the pilot is the backstory of Brandon James, a killer from 20 years ago who some are suspecting to be involved in Nina's death. Apparently he was a deformed young kid who was being kept away from the rest of the world, but he fell in love and became obsessed with a girl named Daisy, later revealed to be Emma's mom. A bunch of her friends ruthlessly beat Brandon up, and so he snapped and went on a murder rampage. That all culminated in him being shot and falling into the lake, and presumably his body was never found! Woah! This is a lot more like Friday the 13th than Scream, but it works well enough. The show highly implies that Brandon is back, with Emma's mom receiving a bloody heart on her doorstep and with Noah being attacked by something in the lake Brandon died in. Could a zombified Brandon still be down there like Jason in Friday the 13th? But here's the thing: there is just no way Brandon really is the killer, right? Scream always loved to set up many characters as suspects but not making the killer the obvious one. So the way the show beats you over the head with the fact that Brandon is definitely responsible for all this makes it seem like that's just a massive red herring.
