Scream: 12 WTF Moments From The TV Season Premiere

9. Absolutely Nobody Cares That Their Friend Is Dead

It seems like a big theme of this show is going to be the idea of teenagers stabbing each other in the back (literally and figuratively), and people in high school pretending to be friends but actually hating each other. But this episode takes that concept so over the top it almost becomes silly. When Nina dies, the show makes absolutely certain you understand how little these people seem to care about it. While waiting to see a grief counselor, Jake reads a story on his phone about Nina's death and complains that he wants more gory details. Later, Brooke hosts a party the very night everyone finds out their friend was brutally murdered, and though it's talked about as a tribute, it's really just a regular party. In a truly ridiculous image, there's a single iPad showing a picture of Nina with a candle in front of it, and that's the extent of their vigil. Later on, Emma makes this all 100% clear once again when she asks, "Are you supposed to like your friends in high school?" There's nothing wrong with exploring the duplicitous nature of high school relationships, but the episode just has absolutely no subtly about it.
