Secret Invasion Episode 1 Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs

9. Down - Skrull Rules

The Skrulls have been a part of the MCU for a number of years now. Canonically they first appeared in the mid-90s with Captain Marvel, but they have also been touched upon in the likes of WandaVision, Loki, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Though we don't know a great deal about them, we at least know the basics.

Episode one of Secret Invasion, however, threw out some confusing lore about the alien race, and some rules that were certainly head-scratchers.

A Skrull can take the shape and DNA of any human, and do it well with enough practice. However, in New Skrullos, it appeared that they needed some technological assistance. Then, there was why G'iah and the rest of Gravik's warriors kept their human skins on.

Despite their motto literally being 'home in my own skin', they are forced to wear their fleshy masks at all times, even within their own walls, because the longer they do the less likely it is that they are to be discovered. This immediately feels like a flimsy pretext to avoid any more Skrull CGI or practical effects than necessary.

Talos has never had any issue with staying undetected no matter how long he had been wearing that particular skin, and in the final scene of the episode Gravik changes form several times in the middle of a crowded square without anyone noticing. This doesn't seem to fit with the rules laid down earlier in the episode.
