Secret Invasion Episode 3 Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs

1. Up - There Was Bound To Be One

Secret Invasion Nick Fury
Marvel Studios

From the moment the Skrulls touched down on Earth, there were rumours and theories about which MCU characters could have been replaced by the shapeshifting aliens. Nick Fury himself was a prime candidate, and was indeed played by Talos throughout Spider-Man: Far From Home, but what about someone bigger?

What would happen if an Avenger were to be replaced by a Skrull? Well, episode three all but confirmed that the James Rhodes seen in episode two wasn't James Rhodes at all, he was a Skrull. There was always likely to be one Avenger targeted, and this is it.

During Rhodey's conversation with Fury in episode two, he called him Nick. As confirmed in episode three, this was exactly how Fury knew that Talos was being impersonated. No one calls him Nick. So, the high ranking government official that Fury had a lead on is Rhodey. Just to make this twist slightly more twisty, when Priscilla called to speak to Gravik, she was gatekept by a Skrull with what was clearly Don Cheadle's voice.

So, the same questions apply as when Everett Ross was revealed to be a Skrull. How long has Rhodey not been Rhodey? Is this a recent, post-blip development, and if so where is the real James Rhodes? On the other hand, as the Skrulls have been on Earth since 1995, technically we could have been watching a Skrull Rhodey ever since 2008.
