She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode Nine Review - 8 Ups & 4 Downs

11. Down - Was It Possibly Taken Too Far?

The aforementioned fourth wall-breaking and meta jokes have gone a long way toward making the series what it has been over the course of season one. It has been an utter joy to see Jen Walters directly addressing the audience and making jokes about Ed Norton and Wong.

This was taken to a ridiculous level in the finale, as Jen literally climbed through the panels of the Disney+ menu before talking to the writing staff of the show. Big Mouth did something similar at the end of season five, where Nick Birch met Nick Kroll, but this arguably worked a lot better possibly because it was a cartoon.

With She-Hulk however, it was a little hard to keep your belief suspended. It worked up to a point, but perhaps turning Kevin Feige into an AI robot was going too far. Is it possible that it was just a bit too silly? It feels like the scene could have been kept to just the writers’ room and been just as effective.

Then there was the overloading of meta jokes. There were definitely too many to the point that they almost lost their reaction. Jen mentioned the X-Men, questioned several MCU characters and their daddy issues, the budget was continually referenced, as was her potential return. Less would have been more at this point.
