She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode One Review - 7 Ups & 3 Downs
How well did the MCU just introduce its newest hero?
It seems like only yesterday that the MCU picked back up again after the pandemic shut the entire world down, with WandaVision kicking off Phase Four on Disney+. Fast forward just over 18 months and She-Hulk is finally here as the final series of this particular MCU chapter.
There were a lot of mixed feelings coming into the pilot episode. From Tatiana Maslany being cast as a better “Alison Brie type” than Alison Brie, the trailer’s very questionable CGI, and the fact that the MCU is going through something of a rough patch right now threatened to put a dampener on any excitement for the series.
However, early reviews have painted She-Hulk as potentially the best MCU series on Disney+ so far, but did episode one actually live up to those expectations? Has She-Hulk: Attorney at Law put its best foot forward in the same way as Loki or Ms. Marvel, or has it struggled out of the gate?
As with any TV episode, there were highlights and lowlights, but overall ‘A Normal Amount Of Rage’ was a fun episode and a strong start to the series.
Strong, but not perfect…
10. Down - It Was Too Short
One of the best things about the series Marvel has been bringing to Disney+ is that with an entire season’s worth of episodes rather than just a couple of hours, there is far more time to tell the story and develop the moving pieces better.
The majority of these series have had their episodes clock in at anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour in some cases. Episode one of She-Hulk however, was much shorter, lasting only just over half an hour before the credits rolled.
There was a lot more that could have been added into the episode with another ten or fifteen minutes, in particular a stronger origin story for Jen, potentially closer to that of the comic books rather than a somewhat rushed blood mix-up, and of course more time for Titania’s introduction.
As it was, there was a great amount of time spent on Jen and Bruce in Mexico, as there should have been, but it felt like it hit a million miles an hour once it got back into the courtroom. The pacing left a lot to be desired and could have been fixed with just a few more minutes.
