She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode Two Review - 7 Ups And 4 Downs

10. Down - Forced Toxic Masculinity

From the first episode it was clear that Jennifer Walters would be coming face to face with a lot of adversity in She-Hulk, both in terms of being a Hulk, but also as a woman.

By and large this was done well in the pilot, as she battled sexism in her office, toxic masculinity from her own cousin (though this landed in the Downs as no one wanted to see it come from Bruce Banner), and Jen gave a powerful speech on how she is forced to control every emotion.

This will be a defining aspect to the series throughout, but in episode two it felt a little more forced than before. Dennis, who had already been painted as a sexist dick, was dialled up a notch to the point of his misogyny feeling shoe-horned and completely fabricated. It no longer felt real.

Literally referring to a woman in the bar as ‘it’ was as on the nose as you could possibly get, and the scene was robbed because of it. It was more subtle before, but now it was too over the top and forced to actually feel believable.
