Sherlock: 10 Biggest Plot Twists
5. Sherlock Fakes His Death – The Reichenbach Fall
‘The Reichenbach Fall’ is a strong contender for the best Sherlock episode. From beginning to end it hooked in viewers with its fast pace and unpredictable storyline.
The final stages of the episode see our favourite detective fall from a great height in order to save his friends from Moriarty’s snipers. Crucially, the audience sees such a fall from Watson’s perspective, and as a result, Sherlock’s death is both tragic and authentic.
Whilst it seemed unlikely the writers would kill off their titular character, it was hard not to believe Sherlock was genuinely dead given he had also died in one of the original short stories by Conan Doyle. Thankfully, the final shot of the episode reveals Sherlock to be alive and well.
Though other twists were certainly more shocking, the best aspect of this closing scene was that it sparked years of conversations and fan theories about how the great detective managed to fake his death.
