Sherlock: 10 Ingenious Things About Series 3

2. The Development Of John And Sherlock

We were promised a big reaction to Sherlock's return. And while we all suspected that John would be spiky, distrustful and resentful of his best friend faking his death, it was more than welcome that that reaction didn't last long. Because ultimately, life is too short, and people should tell the people they love that they love them. That was the whole point of the bomb-on-the-tube scene, as Watson broke down, remembered that he had a fiancée waiting for him at home, and declared that he forgave Sherlock. Series 3 has shown that life really is too short for John to be angry at Sherlock forever; they're best friends. They might as well realise that: we've known it for longer than they have. And as the show continues, it's great to see new sides to John and Sherlock, from the bizarre hilarity of them both drunk, to the subtle look after John says "Sherlock... mate", as if he realises how strange an address that is for the great Sherlock Holmes. It's been lovely to see the relationship develop. There's less of the manly faux-contempt, and more of the quiet admiration for each other. That's what we see, and it's nice that they now see that too.
