Sherlock: 10 Ingenious Things About Series 3

3. Both Moriarty And Irene Live In Sherlock's Mind Palace

On the theme of mind palaces, it was fitting that Andrew Scott should make an appearance as a caged Moriarty in Sherlock's head. We're yet to find out whether the fear of Moriarty will play a bigger role in Series 4 or not, but the idea that he exists within a padded cell says a lot about Sherlock Holmes; that's what Sherlock could become if he wanted. Sherlock is on the side of the angels, but he could so easily turn to immorality like Jim; he straddles a line, as we saw with the grey decision to shoot Magnusson, but he keeps that side of his psyche locked away. And that side of Sherlock has the face of the most evil man he's ever met; that's incredibly dark, but it's also brilliantly shot. And on the other end of the spectrum, Irene Adler pops up during some case-solving. He shares a complicated relationship with her - we may well see her again - but for the split-second that she appears, it showed that he thinks of her occasionally, especially when deducing the romances of others. It's insights like these that have made Series 3 so intriguing. Yes, the mind palace sequences are amazing, and the details that have gone into them say so much about Sherlock than we've seen before. But only because of what the inhabitants represent to him.
