Sherlock: 10 Most Hated Episodes

2. The Lying Detective

Sherlock The Final Problem
BBC

The Lying Detective is nothing more than an hour-and-a-half of actors chewing the scenery and writers being overly smug and far too satisfied with themselves. At this point, Sherlock just became this tiresome tedious slog. There is no substance here, no suspense, no intrigue — it's just 90 minutes of busy work with no real consequence. In simpler terms, it's a gigantic waste of time.

Toby Jones is certainly a great actor but his character is so uninteresting and unimaginative. Killing off Moriarty was probably the worst thing to happen to this show because every new villain that came after him has just been so poorly defined. It's as if the writers killed Moriarty for the shock factor and now have no idea what they're doing with any of their new villains.

Mary, John's wife who died in the previous episode, is still here as a constantly appearing ghost. She is as pointless as ever but the writers refuse to let her go. As always, the second half of Sherlock continues to be extremely messy, this offering giving us way too many flashbacks and a lot of pointless moments clearly only there to help the episode reach its standard runtime. The Lying Detective left a lot of Sherlock fans scratching their heads, wondering what the hell happened to a series once so clever and sharp.

Writer, visual designer, and The Simpsons fan. Still hasn't finished Super Mario Bros. 3 and probably never will. Rocks at board games, though.
