Sherlock: 13 WTF Moments From The Abominable Bride

7. The Villains Are... Feminists

Despite that hugely shocking moment, The Abominable Bride didn't rest on its laurels for the next half hour and instead laid on another ridiculous moment - that the episode's real villains are in fact a group of militant suffragettes who are getting their revenge on the men who wronged them. While it might still be a contentious point to make the nowadays exonerated suffragettes the bad guys, what really makes this a ballsy move by Moffat and Gatiss is dressing them up in the infamous pointed hoods used by the Ku Klux Klan, visually suggesting they are on a par with that organisation. Of course, the episode is firmly on the side of the suffragettes as shown through its satirical look at Victorian sexism and Mycroft even saying "this is a war we must lose" but still, the image of feminists in the costume of the KKK is one that is always going to ruffle some feathers.
