Sherlock: 18 Best Moments (In Gifs)

2. John's Graveyard Speech

So often in Sherlock we talk of Benedict Cumberbatch's incredible screen presence, or Andrew Scott's psychotic performance. It's so easy though to forget how brilliant Martin Freeman is as John Watson. Moffat's claimed that Freeman finds "a sort of poetry in the every-man", and it's most beautifully shown in this scene; John stands at the grave of his best friend, and tells him that he was the best man he ever knew. It only becomes sadder as he tells him how much he owes him and how lonely it is, but Watson then breaks down, as he asks him not to be dead. It's one of the most tear-jerking scenes that television has produced in recent years, and is so expertly handled; it's subtle acting, with the posture of a soldier, and extremely moving.
