Sherlock: 20 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References

8. Jeff Hope

The serial killer cabbie in A Study In Pink is one of the more memorable of Sherlock€™s villains behind Moriarty. His scheme is a particularly unique one €“ killing people by chance, letting his victim pick the harmless pill or the poison.

If you know your Sherlock Holmes, you€™ll recognise this as the same plot of the killer in A Study In Scarlet, the first Holmes novel. In that, God-fearing American Jefferson Hope pretends to be a London cabbie in order to locate his old enemies but leaves their fates up to them by giving them the choice of death or survival.

One of the sneakiest easter eggs on this list makes explicit the connection between the two. Though the cabbie€™s name is not mentioned on screen, the credits list him as Jeff Hope.
