Sherlock: 20 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References

3. An Old-Fashioned Opening

Thanks to the San Diego Comic Con back in July, we've got a 90 second clip from the Sherlock Christmas special to salivate over until the full thing is broadcast later this year.

Presumably the special€™s opening moments, it shows Victorian London at Christmastime €“ and is actually a loving recreation of the opening sequence to probably the most famous Victorian version of Sherlock Holmes.

From the first image being the Baker Street sign to the musical cues in the soundtrack, it very much resembles the first few moments of The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, a popular series that aired on Granada (now ITV) back in the 80s and starred Jeremy Brett as the detective. Fans generally consider Cumberbatch to be the only actor to give Brett a run for his money for the greatest portrayal of Holmes.
