Sherlock: 20 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References

2. The Third Holmes Brother

Amongst everything else in the aforementioned packed climax of His Last Vow, you might have missed this whopper of a throwaway line.

When accused of showing leniency to Sherlock, Mycroft tells a colleague: €œI€™m not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one€€

That's right, Mycroft and Sherlock have another brother! Well, maybe that should be had another brother as Mycroft€™s tone is a little sinister. Could the two other Holmes boys have bumped their brother off?

Naturally, this is a nod to the wider world of Sherlock Holmes. Fans theorise that Sherlock and Mycroft must have had an eldest brother named Sherrinford (Doyle€™s original name for Sherlock) who would have taken care of the family€™s estate while the other two lived in London. Are we about to see Sherrinford turn up in Sherlock? Hurry up, series four!
