Sherlock: 6 Reasons It Needs To End (And 4 Reasons It Should Come Back)
2. Cumberbatch And Freeman Have A Lot More To Give
When it comes down to it, probably the number one reason why the show is so popular is because of the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Yes, let's not write off Moffat and Gatiss' script work, but if they had got the wrong actors to play the leads then Sherlock would have fallen flat on its face. Cumberbatch and Freeman are two of the best British actors of their generation and they inhabit these two iconic roles like very few people have done before. In fact, they are arguably the greatest Holmes-Watson pairing we have ever seen on screen. If they only ever got to portray these characters a measly 13 times, it would be a great tragedy.
In the past, both actors have spoken about how they would love to play these characters for years to come, assuming they could find the time to. Cumberbatch, specifically, has said he would love to take his portrayal of Holmes into his fifties or sixties, so that we might see the detective evolve over his life - just as you do in the original stories.
It's unlikely that the actors have altered their opinion on this so we can assume they are still willing to play these roles for the long-term. So why kill it off now? Sure, it might be a while before the next season arrives, but that'll have to be the price we pay for its continuation. Trust us, Sherlock fans are used to waiting.
