Sherlock: Each Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Mycroft Holmes
Mark Gatiss often appears in the work that he writes, and Mycroft is one such role that he excels in, as the arrogant and powerful older Holmes brother is an enjoyable part of the series.
He certainly has the best introduction, as the first episode deliberately bates the audience into believing he is Sherlock's arch nemesis, Moriarty. However, once it is revealed that the character isn't the malicious and calculating antagonist, he instantly becomes a humorous and petty side to the story.
Seeing the sibling rivalry between the two Holmes boys is not only amusing, but gives the audience a notion that Sherlock isn't the perfect genius you may think he is. This leads to a far more engaging series, as the audience are aware that he can be faulted.
Mycroft is incredibly patronising, not only to Sherlock but to every character, and this helps him to exude an aura of superiority. Additionally, his place in the show is incredibly vital, as he often finds himself completely entwined with the main storyline of the episodes, and this helps him to rise a little higher.
