Sherlock: Each Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Dr. John Watson

Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock
BBC

Many readers may be surprised to see that the titular character isn't at the number one spot on this list, but there are many reasons why John Watson ranks as the best role in the show. The first - and most important - is that he is the audiences' eye into the series. John is the first character that the audiences meet, and he guides them through the show delicately, whilst still giving them plenty of conflict and entertainment.

In many adaptations - and even the novels themselves - Watson is treated as a secondary figure to the leading detective. Traditionally he isn't the most well-developed character and is a simple contrast to Sherlock. However, this version utterly delves into him, bringing with it the concept of PTSD, marital frustration, loyalty and a tonne of agency.

Martin Freeman has given many fantastic performances in his career, but this one stands out as he genuinely delves into the dark psyche of a war veteran, turned assistant detective, whilst still capturing the sarcastic sense of humour that he is known for.
