Get ready to come out of the woodwork and the dark places of the internet, Sherlock fans, because your favourite show is returning to TV very soon.

After travelling back to Victorian times (sort of) for one night only at the start of the year, the fourth series of the hit BBC detective drama is expected to arrive January 2017 – a whole three years since the last full season. So what can we expect from the new run, apart from the usual murders, one-liners, and writing floating about the screen?

Things are naturally being kept tightly under wraps at the moment, but certain bits and pieces have been released or teased in interviews that give us some major clues as to what we will see in Series Four. Not to mention the thrilling 90 second trailer revealed at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Our sole look at the new series at the moment, the trailer teased a very different tone and some tough times ahead for Sherlock and the CSI Baker Street gang. Could this be the most dramatic run of the show yet? We'll have to wait and see, but here's what we definitely know about Sherlock Series 4.

Sherlock has always been just as acclaimed for its innovative directing as much as its writing. Much of the first two series, for instance, was helmed by Paul McGuigan (who originally came up with the idea to show text messages on screen).

With McGuigan having moved on to new projects (like Marvel's Luke Cage), two new directors and one returnee will take up the reins. In charge of episode two is Benjamin Carron, previously of Wallander, Skins and many Derren Brown shows. Episode three sees Nick Hurran return to the series. He previously directed Series Three’s finale His Last Vow and is also known for Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary bash The Day of the Doctor.

The one that made waves in the media, though, was the appointment of Rachel Talalay to helm episode one – the show’s first ever female director. Talalay - also of The Flash and Supernatural vintage - previously earned acclaim for her direction of recent Doctor Who episode Heaven Sent (the Peter Capaldi one-hander). Given that, she is sure to do a great job with Sherlock as well.
