Episode: The Great Game Directed At: John Well into episode 3's cat-and-mouse style finale, Sherlock is still yet to be fully tuned into the contagious compassion of his new friend. This line serves to really highlight the differences between Sherlock and John's coping methods in matters of life and death €“ John oozes sympathy and concern while Sherlock considers such things as weaknesses when solving the puzzle at hand - "Will caring about them help save them?" he asks. "Then I will continue not to make that mistake." Sherlock is always keen to reiterate his disinterest in sentiment, at one point referring to it as "a chemical defect often found in the losing side", but in this relatively early, callous swipe at John's concern for one of Moriarty's victims, it first truly hits home how inhuman this strange, brilliant man is. It's a powerful moment in the friendship of the two leads and helps to build an obstacle which they both must overcome €“ and both eventually do.
