Firstly, it's a line from Doyle himself - barely paraphrased at all from the original novel, which proves that Holmes' penchant for rudeness is hardly a new concept, and secondly, it was intended utterly as a compliment €“ further evidence that Sherlock has about as much knowledge on the subject of human emotion as he does on the solar system. John, having spent the previous evening as audience to one of Sherlock's miserly, arrogant outbursts, is on delicate terms with his difficult friend. So this poor attempt at a compliment does little to soften the bitterness. Thankfully, the pressing nature of the mystery soon takes precedence and their turbulent friendship survives another day.
