The Simpsons: 10 Dark Jokes That Took You By Surprise

5. Moe's Soulmate ('The Blue And The Gray')

It's Valentine's Day, which of course means overblown romantic gestures for the couples of Springfield and another twenty-four hours of crushing loneliness for Moe. When Homer suggests he attend a seminar on how to pick up women, his spirits seem to lift slightly. ''What have I got to lose?'' says Moe, ''They say for every man on Earth there's one woman.'' And then comes the cruellest cutaway gag in the show's history. The camera zooms out, the world spins and we suddenly cut to a nondescript apartment where a woman who appears to be the female version of Moe stands on a chair and slips a noose around her neck... And, in an instant, Moe's apparent soulmate is snatched away from him (she even shares his proclivity for suicide attempts - talk about compatibility!) and with her goes his only chance at happiness. Worse still, he'll never know.
