In The Simpsons Movie, American pop punk band Green Day make a brief appearance and use their vocal talents to sing the show's theme tune from a floating barge on Lake Springfield. After growing tired of having to sing so long, lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong and the gang attempt to give the concert-goers a lecture on conserving the environment. Sadly, the residents don't take too kindly to this and bombard the band with trash. Though the missiles miss, they do pollute Lake Springfield, causing Green Day's barge to dissolve and sending them to their watery deaths. As the barge is sinking, the rockers start playing "Nearer My God To Thee" and at their funeral, the organist plays one of their hit songs, American Idiot - the funeral version. The polluted lake plays a big role in the film, as Russ Cargill (Albert Brooks), head of the Environmental Protection Agency, presents five "unthinkable" options to U.S. President Schwarzenegger (Harry Shearer) to keep the town's pollution contained, resulting in Springfield being encased in a large dome.
