The Simpsons: 5 Greatest Characters (Who Only Appeared In One Scene)

4. Old Irishman - Homer the Vigilante

Oldirish Watch out for this one: there's more to him than his adorable, cliched-old face would have you assume. In 'Homer the Vigilante', Grandpa Simpson defends himself against Homer's assumption that old people are useless by recalling some of the great things he's done for this town, including chasing away all the Irish. Upon this claim, the old Irishman appears - replete with ginger hair and lime-green bowler hat - to explain what a fine job they did. But... if Grandpa et al did such a fine job, what is this man doing here? He couldn't have chased all of the Irishmen out of Springfield because there's one - and a pretty conspicuous one at that - right under his nose! Furthermore, if the Irish are apparently so vilified that they need to be physically banished from the town, what is he doing parading his Irishness about Springfield in the most visual way possible? My conclusion is that the old Irishman is mocking his former adversary - Grandpa is far too old to resume his chasing of the Irish and all he can do is stare in aged sorrow at the one that got away (or remained, as the case may be). Either that or he's there to offer a sarcastic rebuttal to Grandpa's insistence of not being completely useless.
