The Simpsons: Bart's 25 Greatest Moments

1. Bart Sells His Soul

From: Bart Sells His Soul (Season 7, Episode 4) For a Simpsons moment that shows the goodness at the heart of Bart you have to look no further than to one of the show's finest episodes, the one where Bart loses his soul. After taunting Milhouse for believing that there is such a thing as a soul, Bart sells his own to his friend for five dollars; simply writing 'Bart Simpson's Soul' on a piece of paper and giving it to him. Things start to get strange, however, as automatic doors fail to open for him and he can no longer see his own breath. When he fails to laugh at Homer getting his head trapped in the bannister (as Lisa says, 'laughter is the language of the soul'), he knows something is wrong and wants his soul back - only to find out his soul has been sold to an unknown buyer. As Bart prays to God for help, despondent and teary-eyed, Lisa reveals that she bought it for him and Bart hungrily eats the piece of paper, and his soul is returned to him. While the whole story is an imaginative, thoughtful and overall funny tale, the highlights are Bart's dream scenes. The first is in a strangely-coloured world where all his friends have fun with their ghostly-blue souls. When it is time for the children and their souls to go to a shining city beyond a river (presumably Heaven), Bart is unable to steer his way there in a boat built for two. Later on, when he has regained his soul, Bart dreams the same thing but this time he and his soul can row their way to the city, after pranking Martin and his soul of course. While it is hard to pick the definitive moment of a character who has appeared in hundreds of hours of television, this must surely be it as it manages to do what The Simpsons does best; it looks intelligently at an everyday issue, in this case, religious viewpoints, but roots it in its characters, with a huge dollop of wit and hilarity. Moments such as this one prove that everyone's favourite anarchic animated character is actually far more than that. Bart Simpson; the cartoon character with a soul. Agree with our choices?
