The Simpsons: Ranking The Flashback Episodes

3. Lisa's First Word

Oddly enough, Lisa's First Word is more concerned with Maggie's first word, at least initially. When talking about Maggie's first world, the story of Lisa's first is in turn told. It aired during season four, and is one of the better flashback moments primarily because of the brother-sister bond that develops. Upon the arrival of Lisa into the Simpson world, Bart, who had initially been looking forward to a younger sibling, becomes jealous of her, insisting "I'm the baby!" to his parents. His comical attempts to get rid of her - mailing her out with the post, shoving her through Flander's doggy door, etc. - bring a lot of laughs, but it's when Lisa utters "Bart" as her first word that the episode really tugs at the heart. Then it goes and yanks on it. After both kids refuse to ever call him anything but Homer, out of view of her parents, Maggie (voiced by Elizabeth Taylor) utters a single word: Daddy. The heart-warming nature of this episode makes it one of the best flashback stories in series history.
