The Simpsons: Ranking The Flashback Episodes

2. I Married Marge

I Married Marge in season three opens with Marge using Barnacle Bill's Home Pregnancy test during a pregnancy scare in the present. The test fails, and Marge heads to the doctor, leaving Homer alone with the kids - at which point he chooses to recount their first pregnancy together. Though he struggles to keep his children's attention, you hear the story of how he and Marge wound up married, with children. Back in the past, Homer works at the local mini-putt turning the wind mill, and is madly in love with Marge, taking her to movies, on drives, singing with her, and generally being carefree (this is also the episode where Homer spoils the ending of The Empire Strikes Back for a line full of film goers waiting to see it). After an unforgettable night making love in the mini-putt castle, Marge shows symptoms of being pregnant. That leads to a quickie proposal and the start of a tumultuous union that leads to the wedded bliss the couple knows and loves today. Building on what was started in The Way We Was, the episode is one of the best flashbacks in Simpsons history thanks to a solid mix of humour and sentimentality.
