Sons Of Anarchy: 10 Most Controversial Moments

7. The School Shooting

Any time this subject is tackled it should handled with care, as it is a quite sensitive topic among American audiences. For the most part television shows avoid dramatizing this issue like the plague because of how deeply invocative it is. So when Sons of Anarchy took on the problem of school shootings, there was justifiable apprehension due to the show's shockingly overt nature.

Surprisingly Sutter and company approached the material with an uncharacteristic subtlety. Just as Jax was maneuvering SAMCRO to get them out of the gun trade, one of their firearms fell into the hands of a bullied adolescent who took it to school and unleashed it upon his classmates. Rather than bombard us with violent imagery - as Sons is wont to do - this time of a campus strewn with the bodies of youth, the camera remains stationary while only the sounds of gunshots and terror paint the picture.

It's one of the few times throughout the series' run where we're faced with the very real, very negative consequences of SAMCRO's criminal dealings, tearing down the "Robin Hood-esque" veneer that viewers sometimes created when romanticizing the characters we've grown attached to.
