When Cameron Hayes took Abel from Charming, he was blinded by rage and sought the quickest and harshest revenge he could exact on the Sons. When he landed in Belfast however, Kellan Ashby had him killed, and took Abel to a Catholic adoption agency to keep him away from Jax. Even Jimmy O thought it best to give the baby back to his family, but Kellan refused.

He wanted to save JT's grandson from the MC life in the way he wasn't able to save his son, but there is no doubt that stealing the child and putting him up for adoption behind his father's back was the wrong way to go about it.

Ashby then tried to manipulate Jax into killing Jimmy O for the IRA, promising that he would have his child back in return, though the Irish priest had absolutely no intention of honouring his side of the deal. However, when Jimmy got his hands on the child, Kellan offered himself as another hostage for him in exchange, despite knowing full well that he would be killed.

This was ultimately what he was willing to do to save the baby, as he clearly cared about him, though it was his own fault that they needed to make such a trade in the first place. Regardless of his motive, giving someone else's child away is an unspeakable and vile act.
