When August Marks first crossed paths with SAMCRO he was the heir to a huge empire. As soon as Tig killed his boss however, he stepped up to being one of Oakland's biggest gangsters in a big way. His predecessor was the smartest man in the game, but Marks was the deadliest.

His reach and resources helped the MC get out of running guns, and he could get protection in prison, but it wasn't until Jax threatened the security of his business that he showed how ruthless he could truly be. Despite expressly forbidding Jax from starting a war with Henry Lin, the SAMCRO President did it anyway, upsetting the delicate balance required to keep Marks' money making machine working.

After being blackmailed, his retaliation was to completely crush and kill the MC, starting with the torture and murder of Bobby. He promised to do the same to the rest of the Sons, wiping the entire charter from the face of the Earth.

Aside from his cut-throat attitude, what made Marks such a strong villain was that he was so protected. He had senators and judges in his pocket, and allowed himself zero weaknesses. The only way Jax could beat him was to murder him in broad daylight, something that if he wasn't already planning on killing himself could never have been a viable option.
