During his time in the Sons of Anarchy, as both Vice President and President, Jax Teller saw his family destroyed. His father was killed by his step-father, his wife was killed by his mother, and he himself in turn killed her in retaliation.

He was desperate for his sons not to grow up knowing the same life he did. After he murdered Gemma, he set about putting things in place for when he was gone. The Mayan and Niner territories were set, Chibs and Tig became the new President and Vice President, and his boys left for Norco with Nero and Wendy.

Since Jax had already killed Jury, another Sons of Anarchy President, there had been a unanimous Mayhem vote, meaning that no matter what Jax did, he would have to die. Instead of putting this onus on his brothers and his club, he elected instead to take his own life on the very same road his dad had died.

He wanted Abel and Thomas to grow up despising the very idea of him, his club, and the life he led, something that would be easier to achieve if he was dead. He finally had a release from the pain of losing Tara, and the poetic conclusion to his story helped ensure Sons of Anarchy's ending was one of the greatest and most satisfying in TV history.
