There are many, many deaths throughout the entirety of Sons of Anarchy, few of which could match the sheer emotional impact as Opie's. The man gave everything to his club, only for that same club to leave him with nothing.
He spent five years of his life in prison, he lost his wife, and he lost his dad, all because of the Sons of Anarchy. After Clay shot Piney, Opie's allegiance to club was tested, and he found himself taking some time away, struggling to find a way not to blame SAMCRO.
When Jax, Chibs, and Tig went to prison for the murder of Veronica Pope however, Ope proved his commitment by attacking Eli Roosevelt and joining them. As part of the retribution Damon Pope sought for Tig's murder of one of the Niners and a cop he had on his payroll, he demanded that one of the Sons paid with his life.
It was down to Jax to decide, and since Pope ruled out Tig as he wanted him alive and suffering, he was about to sign his own death warrant. However, Opie stepped in before he could.
