10. Jax's Unresolved Daddy Issues
He wants to be like his dad. He wants to be nothing like his dad. He was manipulated to be more like his dad. He was manipulated to be less like his dad. After five seasons of watching Jax struggle with the kind of man that he wants to be, and the direction in which he wants to take the club it's getting a little tiresome. For the first three seasons it was intriguing to see where Jax was going to go, and how he was going to get there. Especially when we as viewers had pieces of that puzzle that the character did not, but now its just becoming redundant and making Jax seem pretty whiny. Season four saw a lot of what we always see from Jax struggling with leaving the club for the sake of his family, or staying and taking the gavel and the president patch. Eventually he swears off what he has come to regard as a passive mentality of his father, and both through circumstance and necessity, take the seat at the head of the table. Interestingly enough, it could be argued that the manner in which Jax becomes president mirrors the usurping of the throne that was committed by Clay. A connection that Im sure isnt accidental. This ties into one of my biggest issues with season five it tried WAY too hard to be
Breaking Bad. While some may consider this a favorable comparison, its an argument that
Sons is going to come up on the short end of every time. With
Breaking Bad, everyone watching has pretty much turned against Walter White as his shift from protagonist to antagonist has become complete. Now it seems that
Sons of Anarchy is heading in that direction with Jax, as he did some seriously sadistic shit in season five. The show is quickly becoming The Tragedy of Jax Teller as its been shown that he is becoming, perhaps intentionally on his part, the exact opposite of what his father wanted him to be.
