As one of the club's First 9, "Piney" Winston spent the first few seasons as a counterpoint to other First 9 member and then-current leader Clay Morrow. Believing Jax to be the leader the club truly needs, Piney eventually learns of Clay's involvement in Donna's murder, grows disgusted by the club's involvement in drug running and even rightfully surmises that Clay was behind the murder of Jax's father and original club leader, John Teller. After Piney threatens Clay with the suggestion that he will tell the club all about John Teller's desire to avoid gun running and the truth around his death, Clay murders Piney in his own cabin before arranging the scene to appear as though it was a cartel hit. Throughout the series, Clay had done a number of dastardly things, but had somehow managed to remain endearing due to his devotion to the club and Ron Perlman's natural charm. But with the murder of Piney -- a character that viewers had spent four seasons getting to know -- Clay turned a corner for many fans, finally revealing the monster he can truly be and setting into motion a domino effect that is still being felt today.
