As the club's most spontaneous decision-maker, Tig Trager had spent several seasons trying to dig himself out from under the weight of his murder of Opie's wife, Donna. When Opie shoots Clay near the end of the show's fourth season, Tig is tricked into thinking the attempted murder was the result of a One-Niner drive-by and sets out for vengeance against their leader Laroy, only to run down Laroy's girlfriend Veronica instead. Unfortunately for Tig and the club, Veronica's father, Damon Pope, was Oakland's most powerful criminal kingpin. After making Tig watch his own daughter burn to death, Pope wasn't content to let the score settle at an eye for an eye. When Jax, Tig, Chibs and Opie were taken to prison at the beginning of the fifth season, Pope forced Jax to sacrifice one of his friends, with Jax choosing himself before Opie stepped in his place and gave his life. Even then, Pope did not stop, demanding a cut of the club's profits and putting a ticking clock over Tig's head. By season's end, Jax seemingly gives Tig over to Pope, only to double-cross Pope, save Tig and frame Clay for Pope's murder. Jax's outsmarting of Pope is one of the series' most cheer-worthy moments and his death one of the most gratifying.
