Space Force Review: 5 Ups & 3 Downs
2. The Satire Is A Little Too Much
There’s always a very thin line to navigate when making a parody movie or TV show. It’s a tricky task to get it right and not many writers manage to pull it off.
Sadly, this was the case for Space Force. For all the great moments the show produces, there seems to be an on-the-nose reference just around the corner. Obviously, you can’t make a show based on a real-life government department without the occasional nod to reality, but Space Force leans too heavy on the parody.
Aside from the obvious F**k Jerry reference (which is a joke that never quite lands), a particular low point is the portrayal of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Congresswoman has done a lot of good for her constituents since she was elected, but Space Force seems to be basing her counterpart on the Republican view. During her time on the show, she comes off arrogant and confrontational, rather than truly concerned for her citizens.
It’s a real concern, considering the entire premise of the show is to spoof the USSF. Hopefully it’s something the writers can turn around if season two happens.
