Squid Game: Every Major Death Foreshadowed

5. Oh Il-nam (Player 001) - The Fake Death

Squid Game
Netflix

Brought to life by actor Oh Yeong-Su, it was revealed in the final episode of the season that Il-nam was in fact the creator of the Squid Game and whilst he once found joy and thrill in watching the games unfold, he'd now joined as a player in a bid to feel something once more.

Uniquely, Il-nam had two deaths. His real death at the end of the season was foreshadowed quite obviously. In the opening episode, Il-nam told Gi-hun that he had a brain tumour and just as he said, Il-nam eventually died from a brain tumour.

There's also his fake death though which took place during round four of the Squid Game. Il-nam let Gi-hun win the marble game and so we presumed that Il-nam was shot along with the other losing players - but we didn't actually see this happen.

Il-nam was the only player to seemingly enjoy playing Red Light, Green Light and he certainly knew not to pick the umbrella in the honeycomb game. As the game's founder, he also likely played a role in designing the set for the marble game hence why he recognised it.

There's also the fact that Il-nam is Player 001 and in English, his name roughly translates to 'first man' both alluding to the fact that Il-nam was the founder of the Squid Game. In retrospect, it seems kind of obvious that there was more to Il-nam's initial 'death' than meets the eye.
