Squid Game: Every Major Death Foreshadowed

Little did we know, but episode two teased almost every major death in the series.

Squid Game transcended the format of television and became a cultural moment, and rightfully so. Providing a story that is equal parts entertaining and thought provoking, Squid Game captured the attention of the globe - having been seen by over 142 million households in its first month on Netflix alone.

It was near impossible to avoid people discussing the show, but if you are unfamiliar with the South Korean drama (really!?), Squid Game follows a group of financially struggling civilians who partake in a series of children's games in the hopes of winning a large cash prize.

They soon discover that things aren't quite that simple though and if you lose, you die. Over the course of the six rounds, the number of players understandably whittles down from several hundred to just a handful and so we witness several major deaths.

The show has been scrutinised endlessly by fans, with some pointing out the foreshadowing present in prior episodes (like this Reddit thread), making it clear a lot of these deaths were foreshadowed much earlier in the season.

So prepare to relive some traumatic moments as we recount Squid Game's major deaths and the scenes during which they were foreshadowed. Trust us, you'll be kicking yourself that you didn't notice earlier.

Having watched Squid Game, you probably can't look at marbles the same way anymore. These once innocent children's toys are now incredibly emotionally triggering, having played a major role in the deaths of several key characters, beginning with Ali.

Portrayed by actor Anupam Tripathi, Ali was an illegal immigrant worker from Pakistan. When the players of the Squid Game temporarily voted to stop the game, Ali went to see his employer who refused to pay him the six months of wages Ali was owed. Ali proceeded to steal a large envelope of money as he pushed his boss into some machinery - crushing his boss' hand in the process.

Flash forward to round four of the now-resumed Squid Game and Ali was partnered with Sang-woo. The duo guessed if one another were holding an even or odd number of marbles. Ali guessed his way to victory leaving Sang-woo's life in the balance.

Desperate to survive, Sang-woo came up with a deceiving plan. This involved creating a bag for Ali to hang around his neck and keep the marbles in for safe keeping. However, Sang-woo kept the marbles for himself and handed Ali a bag of pebbles. Unfortunately, this sealed pure-hearted Ali's fate and he was subsequently shot.

So where does the foreshadowing come in? Well, just like Ali stole the money from his employer (albeit if it was rightfully his), so too did Sang-woo steal the marbles from Ali. They do say what goes around comes around after all.
