Squid Game: What Would An English Remake Look Like?
5. Honeycomb Shape Cutting - The Wire Loop Challenge
This particular game is so alien to those of us in the UK that people were left asking whether it was just made up for the show, a speculation which was quickly shot down as people shared their love of the Dalgona-based challenge.
In the show we see the participants asked to choose from four shapes, not yet knowing what this is for. They choose from a triangle, a star, a circle or an umbrella, and are handed small metal containers with honeycomb rounds inside. Their chosen shape is etched into the sugary substance, and their challenge is to remove it using a pin, without causing any cracks or breaks.
There is no direct translation of this game to the UK, however were they to remake it it would certainly be a challenge that relies heavily on a steady hand and a lucky choice of an easier shape!
Us Brits are no stranger to a game based on a steady hand - we love a game of Operation or building a card-tower as much as the next guy. One childhood game that could prove the most suitable though could be the trusty old wire loop challenge.
In this game, the player must move a metal loop over a wire shape without allowing the loop to come into contact with the shape. Should this happen, the circuit is completed and a buzzing noise sounds, signalling the player's failure.
It could be easy to imagine this translated to a Squid-game style task: with players selecting one of four increasingly complex shapes and then being challenged to steadily navigate them. With the electric nature of the original game and the murderous nature of the Squid Game, perhaps if players were to make contact between the loop and the wire they themselves could receive a deadly electric shock. No second chances in this place!
