9. Final Frontier
Final Frontier was intended to be an animated web series (sort of like Tom Hanks Electric City). Set in 2528, it was a much darker take on the Trek universe than even DS9 gave us. In the 2460s, somebody caused a war between the Federation and Romulus by detonating Omega particles, which ruin subspace. When the war is done, Andoria is destroyed, Vulcan leaves the Federation to further reunification, Qonos is under Romulan control, Andoria is destroyed, and the Federation is starting to fracture. This show would be set on an Enterprise, but one that was the Starfleet equivalent of the battlestar Galactica from the BSG reboot: an old war horse relegated to menial duties. Stuck on border patrol, the Enterprises new captain, Alexander Chase, would try to bring back the old seek out new life and new civilizations spirit of Starfleet. So what happened? The entire staff got laid off in a management change at CBS Interactive (which was developing the show), because of Paramount deciding to focus on the Abrams reboot. That might have been for the best, because the shows aesthetic, especially in terms of mechanical design, probably wouldnt have had much success with long time Trek fans. Unlike most dead Trek projects, there is an active
website for Final Frontier, where concept art, storyboards, and scripts are archived.
