Star Trek: 10 Awesome-Sounding Projects That Never Got Made

8. Federation

Star Trek: Federation logo by Mike Okuda Federation (not to be confused with the novel of the same name) was an idea hatched by Bryan Singer and Robert Meyer Burnett (the guy behind the documentaries on the current batch of Trek Blu-Rays). It revolved around a Federation that has grown complacent and losing members because of its human centric nature. Starfleet is low on ships and many of those ships are outdated. So when a new enemy, the Scourge, destroy a ship and two colony worlds, Starfleet does nothing; Vulcan, Bajor, and Betazed leave the Federation. A new Enterprise is commissioned to get Starfleet exploring again, but it€™s main mission is to find the Scourge. When the captain and first officer die, Commander Alexander Kirk has to take command. Like Final Frontier, Federation was going to be a darker take on Trek and got shelved when the Abrams reboot was announced. On paper, it seems a bit too obvious in making the decline of the Federation into an analogy for the decline of America, but it€™s hard to really judge the idea without being able to see the 25 page proposal for the series. While it's unlikely that this idea will be revived after the Abrams film trilogy is over, the fact that we haven't seen the documents leaves room for this project to be revived.
