One of the the craziest things about the Ferengi has always been their absurd attitudes towards women. Some of these problems were sociological while others were actually legal. Wherever these issues came from, they certainly hampered their dealings with many races.

Female Ferengi were not allowed to leave their homes as a general rule, and definitely not Ferenginar. They were not allowed to wear clothes, were expected to chew their children's food for them and certainly were not allowed to talk to strangers. But the big one was they were not allowed to earn profit, the thing that makes a Ferengi a Ferengi.

This all started to change when Ishka, Quark and Rom's mother, started dating Grand Nagus Zek, the leader of the Ferengi people. Her influence helped bring about an number of needed reforms to Ferenginar, including various improvements to how women were perceived and treated. They were obviously desired changes as they were accepted quite quickly.
