Star Trek: 10 Greatest Captain Janeway Speeches
4. Is There A Better Living Embodiment Of What Our Alliance Represents? - Supernova Part 2
Of course, Janeway continues to grace our screens, in her promoted position of Admiral, in Prodigy, and her ability to deliver a powerful and inspiring speech is as strong as ever.
Starting as an adversary, of sorts, to the wayward Protostar crew, the Admiral stays true to her Starfleet principles, at first pursuing these kids as perceived enemies, but then embracing their curiosity and desire to learn of those ideals themselves.
While Kathryn Janeway has always cited Starfleet regulations as her moral code, she has also been known to bend them when necessary. One such instance came in the season 1 finale when the Protostar crew are facing a tribunal - despite their good intentions and efforts to save the Federation. Their desire to join Starfleet Academy is also scrutinised, with Dal being especially targeted due to his being an augment.
Despite there being clear rules against augments joining Starfleet, Janeway is adamant in her stance that Dal should be an exception to the rules. Addressing the court with her head held high and turning the principles of the Federation against themselves:
The Federation is made up of over 150 member species. Dal’s DNA includes 26 of those. So I ask you, is there a better living embodiment of what our alliance represents?
By the end of the episode, all charges have been dropped and all of the kids have been granted a form of acceptance into Starfleet, proving the persuasive power of an almighty Janeway speech.
