Star Trek: 10 More Secrets Of The USS Enterprise D You Need To Know

9. Sickbay Was Actually Massive

Speaking of sections of the Enterprise-D that were never fully realized or put to screen due to budgetary constraints...

Doctor Crusher's sickbay was one of several hubs of storytelling activity in Star Trek: The Next Generation, second only to the bridge and main engineering. However, with just five biobeds, the sickbay was actually incredibly poorly equipped to serve a crew of 1,012. That's due, of course, to the fact that the standing sets could only accommodate so much sickbay.

In-universe, the sickbay we saw on screen for seven seasons was just one facility in a larger complex. Dialogue throughout the series referred to three sickbay wards and surgical suites, medical labs, private hospital rooms, a rehabilitation center, and a morgue were also depicted in various episodes throughout the series. Also, something called the "Null-G ward" is mentioned in a ship-wide announcement in "Yesterday's Enterprise", likely a zero-gravity sickbay facility.

In 2005, Enterprise-D designer Andrew Probert sketched out several expanded areas of the sickbay complex for Star Trek Online, including a dedicated turbolift and a spacious waiting room with trees, even a waterfall. And Rick Sternbach's commerically available blueprints of the ship gave plan views of the much more elaborate facility.
