Star Trek: 10 Reasons Prodigy Is The Best Series Of The Kurtzman Era

One of the criticisms levelled directly at Discovery and Picard is the forgettable nature of the main cast. In Discovery for example, the background bridge crew have been seen as interchangeable and fans struggled for some time to remember just who was who.

In Prodigy each of the main cast have their own distinct personality traits and the beginnings of backgrounds. Viewers know more about them all individually than we know about Kayla Detmer after four seasons aboard the USS Discovery.

Among the Prodigy crew there are already lots of questions; How did a Tellarite and a Medusan end up on a prison planet? What race is Dal? What is Murf? Now according to Star Trek author and Prodigy advisor Dayton Ward, Murf is one of the most curveball franchise references ever and has yet to be guessed by anyone.

Already we have Gwyn's background fleshed out, understand Dal's desire to be needed and the centre of attention. This all comes from three hours of television and provides a key window into the show for its viewers. Time Amok even went so far as to change Rok's character completely after her extended time alone, making her invaluable to the ship.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
