Throughout the series, the spirituality of the Bajoran people played an incredible role in the story. The Prophets. The Pah Wraiths. The orbs. The Celestial Temple. The seemingly endless prophecies that covered virtually everything and anything. Many of those prophecies were focused on Sisko.

In the first episode of the series, he was declared the Emissary of the Prophets by Kai Opaka. He resisted the role at first, but soon grew into it as part of his greater acceptance of his new life centered around Bajor. But as difficult as it was for Sisko to be the Emissary, it was harder for Kira.

Once Kira came to terms with Sisko as the Emissary, that meant she had to learn how to deal with working with an important spiritual leader in her religion on a daily basis. It was a wedge between them for a long time, one they had to overcome for the rest of their relationship to fall into place. Once they did, Kira and Sisko became the team Bajor needed.
