Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of Deep Space 9 You Need To Know
5. There Was Almost A Monorail
While Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Promenade was one of Star Trek's largest, most ambitious standing sets, it was actually originally intended to be much more extravagant.
Early production artwork by illustrator Ricardo F. Delgado featured a larger, grungier Promenade, complete with a working monorail running the length of the upper platform. While this idea was apparently popular behind the scenes, the monorail was ultimately discarded in favor of the more practical and cost effective turbolift system.
While the station never got its Disneyland-esque conveyance, the Promenade and Ops sets were built to incorporate three working turbolifts, the first and only functional turbolifts in the Star Trek franchise.
